West Salem, Oregon

On the “wine side” of the Willamette River

West Salem has grown in fits and starts along with the local economy so the homes here from mid century (and a few older) to new construction.  This side of town has lots of rolling hills so many homes have awe inspiring views of distant mountains, the river or the Golden Man atop the Capitol building.  The two neighborhoods with the highest home value are West Hills Estates and West Meadows Estates.  Both areas have modest annual HOA dues and newer upscale homes.  A more affordable area is Chatnika Heights. This established neighborhood with larger lots and mature landscaping  sits just outside the city limits so residents enjoy a slightly lower property tax bill. This growing area of town offers 8 city and neighborhood parks with walking trails plus Wallace Marine Park which has a large softball complex and a boat launch.

Salem’s only 55+ community that includes privately owned individual homes is in West Salem.  Salemtowne boast an active community center and golf course.  All these are offered at mid-range prices that allow an active retirement.  Homes here sell for between $350,000-$500,000.

West Salem has some really good tacos! Check out  Xicha Brewing Co and Azul Taco house.  Gilgamesh Brewing has good pub food and a wide selection of beers and cider.  Roth’s Market and Ace Hardware are conveniently located in the heart of West Salem.

With over 700 local wineries in the Willamette Valley I hesitate to call out any by name for fear of leaving out a gem but I personally enjoy Brywn Marr Vineyards (about 10 minutes from my house in West Salem), Brooks Winery (a few more minutes up the hill and the views are incredible) and Eola Hills Legacy which is just up the road.
